Getting Cheap Broadway Tickets in New York

July 27, 2010

If you love watching Broadway shows, then you would love to get your hands on Broadway tickets at a discount. Broadway tickets are one of the priciest entertainment tickets as average orchestra seats go for about $110 per person. Broadway tickets do not come cheaply but if you follow some of the steps below, you will be on your way to a Broadway show with discount tickets.

1. First select a musical or play that didn’t open recently or that is highly popular. Usually, tickets for the newest and popular shows are hot sellers and it is very likely that these tickets won’t be available at a discount as high demand is expected. Choose a play that won’t fall in this category and wait a few months to watch a newly opened show.

2. Nonetheless, don’t give up on popular shows yet. Though it takes remarkable luck and timing, you can grab returned tickets of some popular shows at a discount from the theater’s ticket booth. You can get these tickets at the box office of the theater 10 to 15 minutes before show time.

3. Get cheap Broadway tickets at the TKTS booths located in the middle of Times Square or at South Street Seaport. TKTS booth offers discounts on Broadway tickets at up to 50% off the original price on a first-come first-served basis. Unfortunately, tickets purchased at TKTS booths are only available for the day of the show and you can’t purchase tickets ahead of time.

4. Call the box office of the theater and ask for rush tickets or standing room only tickets and inquire about when you can get these tickets. Standing room tickets might be available at the low price of $25 but you may have to watch the play while standing during the entire show. Some of these discounts may be student or senior discounts and you have to bring a valid ID to pick up these tickets.

5. Try to buy tickets in bulk with a group of people and negotiate for a discount with ticket brokers. It’s preferable that you order your Broadway tickets in advance from various online ticket vendors so you can take advantage of coupons, lottery tickets or promotional discounts that are available periodically
